5 ways I get free hotel stays without using points

Most people assume that free hotel stays always require a huge stash of points. But over the past few years of traveling with my family, I’ve realized that some of the easiest “free” hotel nights actually come from credit card perks, annual credits, and free night certificates.

These strategies have helped us stay at hotels around the world without redeeming points, including our recent stays in Scotland and Mexico. Here are the main ways we do it.

Use credit card travel credits

American Express Hotel Credits (up to $600 per year)

Some American Express cards offer one of the most powerful hotel credits available today. The The Platinum Card from American Express allows cardholders to receive up to $600 per year in statement credits when booking hotels through American Express Travel.

This credit applies to prepaid bookings made through two hotel programs:

  • Fine Hotels + Resorts
  • The Hotel Collection

How does the $600 Amex Hotel credit work? The hotel credit is split into two $300 periods each year:

  • January 1 – June 30: up to $300 in credits
  • July 1 – December 31: up to $300 in credits

If you don’t use the credit during each window, it expires and does not roll over. One important detail is that the credit works based on when you book and prepay, not when you stay. This means you can book a stay months later, as long as the charge posts during the eligible credit window.

Fine Hotels + Resorts (best for luxury one-night stays)

The Fine Hotels + Resorts (FHR) program focuses on luxury properties and usually offers the best overall value. Typical benefits include:

  • Daily breakfast for two
  • Guaranteed 4 PM late checkout
  • Early check-in when available
  • Room upgrades when available
  • A $100 property credit for dining, spa, or activities

Unlike The Hotel Collection, FHR bookings do not require a minimum stay, so you can use the credit for a single-night luxury stay, which is often the best strategy for maximizing value. We just used our credit to book a stay at the Park Hyatt Saigon later this year!

The Hotel Collection (best for two-night stays)

The Hotel Collection includes a wider range of upscale hotels but comes with one important requirement:

  • Minimum stay of two consecutive nights

Benefits typically include:

  • Room upgrade when available
  • A $100 on-property credit for dining, spa, or hotel activities

Because of the two-night requirement, this program works best for short weekend stays or city trips where you already plan to stay two nights.

Chase Sapphire Reserve $300 Annual Travel Credit

The Chase Sapphire Reserve Credit Card offers one of the most flexible travel credits available. Cardholders receive a $300 annual travel credit, which automatically applies to purchases in the travel category. This includes expenses like hotels, flights, rental cars, and other travel-related purchases.

Key details about the hase Sapphire Reserve $300 Annual Travel Credit:

  • Up to $300 per year in statement credits
  • Automatically applied to eligible travel purchases
  • Valid during your cardmember year (not calendar year)
  • Applies to purchases made by the primary cardholder or authorized users

Because hotels fall within the travel category, this credit can easily cover one free hotel night at many properties.

Chase Sapphire Reserve “The Edit” Hotel Credit ($500 per year)

Another valuable benefit of the Chase Sapphire Reserve is the hotel credit through The Edit by Chase Travel. Cardholders can receive up to $500 in annual statement credits when booking eligible stays through The Edit.

Here’s how it works:

  • $250 credit from January 1 to June 30
  • $250 credit from July 1 to December 31
  • Applies to prepaid stays of two nights or more
  • Bookings must be made through Chase Travel using the “Pay Now” option

That said, the The Edit by Chase Travel collection tends to feature higher-end properties, so it can be harder to find stays fully covered by the $250 credit. However, with some flexibility in destination and travel dates, it’s still possible to find nights that are mostly, or sometimes entirely, covered by the credit.

Capital One Venture X $300 Travel Credit

The Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card also offers a $300 annual travel credit, which can be used when booking through Capital One Travel.

This credit applies to:

  • Hotels
  • Flights
  • Rental cars
  • Vacation rentals

Because the credit is applied directly to bookings made through the Capital One Travel portal, it can easily cover a full hotel night depending on the property and destination. We used our credit to stay at The Lift Apartments by Ridan Hotels in Lisbon, Portugal, a few years ago.

Earn a Hotel Free Night Certificate by opening a credit card

Free night certificates are one of the easiest ways to get free hotel stays without using points. Many hotel credit cards offer these certificates as annual benefits. Once issued, they can be redeemed for a free night at participating hotels.

Here’s how the most valuable hotel free night certificates work and how you can earn and use them.

World of Hyatt Free Night Certificate (Category 1–4)

The World of Hyatt program offers a Category 1–4 free night certificate (can be used for 1 night), which can be extremely valuable because Hyatt still uses an award chart.

You can earn a Hyatt Category 1–4 free as an annual benefit from the World of Hyatt Credit Card.

The certificate can be redeemed at any Hyatt hotel in Categories 1 through 4. These include many great family-friendly properties such as: Hyatt Regency resorts, Andaz hotels, and Grand Hyatt city hotels.

Hilton Free Night Reward (No Cap)

The Hilton Honors program offers one of the most flexible free night certificates because there is no category cap. That means the certificate can be used at almost any Hilton property worldwide, as long as standard room award availability exists.

Hilton Free night certificates can be earned through several Hilton credit cards, including:

These certificates can be redeemed at luxury Hilton properties such as:

Since these hotels can cost $2,000+ per night, Hilton’s uncapped free night certificate is considered one of the most valuable perks in travel rewards.

Marriott Free Night Award Certificates (35K, 50K, and 85K)

The Marriott Bonvoy program offers several free night certificates based on point values. The most common ones are:

  • 35,000-point certificate
  • 50,000-point certificate
  • 85,000-point certificate

These certificates are typically offered as annual benefits from Marriott credit cards. Each Marriott Free Night Award Certificate can be redeemed for a hotel night costing up to its point value.

But Marriott also allows you to top off the certificate with up to 15,000 additional points, which expands the number of properties you can book.

This makes it easier to use certificates at:

  • Marriott resorts
  • Westin and Sheraton hotels
  • Luxury brands like Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis

Earn a Hotel Free Night Certificate by spending or staying

These Free Night hotel Certificates or rewards are earned through spending on credit cards or completing hotel stays, rather than being automatic benefits.

World of Hyatt Free Night Certificate (Category 1–4)

  • Earn a certificate after spending $15,000 on the World of Hyatt Credit Card in a calendar year
  • Hyatt milestone rewards after 30 elite qualifying nights
  • Hyatt Brand Explorer (when you stay at 5 different Hyatt brands)

World of Hyatt Free Night Certificate (Category 1–7)

Hyatt also offers a more valuable certificate that can be used at Hyatt Category 1 through 7 hotels. You can earn this certificate through Hyatt milestone rewards:

  • After reaching 60 and 100 elite qualifying nights at Hyatt (from your stays and credit card spend)

This certificate unlocks access to many of Hyatt’s most aspirational hotels, including luxury resorts and high-end city properties. Because Category 7 hotels often cost $600+ per night, this is one of the most valuable free night certificates.

Hilton Free Night Reward

You can earn additional Hilton Free Night Certificates by hitting spending milestones on select Hilton American Express cards.

Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card

  • Earn 1 Free Night Reward after spending $15,000 on eligible purchases in a calendar year.
  • Perfect for mid-tier spenders who want an extra free night on top of annual benefits.

Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

  • Earn 1 Free Night Reward after spending $30,000 on eligible purchases in a calendar year.
  • Earn an additional Free Night Reward after spending $60,000 total in the same year.
  • These certificates are uncapped, meaning you can use them at nearly any Hilton property worldwide, including resort

Take Advantage of “5th Night Free” Award Stays

Another easy way to stretch hotel points and pay $0 for the night is by booking award stays that include an additional “free night”. Several hotel loyalty programs offer this perk, allowing you to stay longer without spending additional points.

If you’re planning a multi-night trip, this strategy can significantly reduce the number of points needed for a hotel stay.

Hilton Honors: 5th Night Free on Award Stays

The Hilton Honors program offers one of the most generous versions of this benefit. When you book four consecutive nights using Hilton points, the fifth night is free.

You need Hilton Silver status or higher to receive the benefit. Fortunately, Hilton Silver and Gold statuses are very easy to obtain because they come automatically with Hilton credit cards.

How does the Hilton 5th Night Free work? When booking a stay with points:

  • Pay points for four nights
  • The fifth night costs zero points

The benefit can be applied multiple times on longer stays. For example: 5 nights → pay for 4 or 10 nights → pay for 8.

For families planning beach vacations or resort stays, this can save tens of thousands of points per trip.

Marriott Bonvoy: Stay 5, Pay for 4

The Marriott Bonvoy program offers a similar benefit called Stay for 5, Pay for 4. When you book five consecutive nights using points, Marriott automatically deducts the cost of the lowest-priced night.

  • No elite status is required
  • Works automatically when booking five nights on points
  • The lowest-priced night in the stay becomes free

This benefit also scales for longer stays, meaning the system will continue to discount the cheapest night for every five nights booked.

IHG One Rewards: Fourth Night free with credit cards

The IHG One Rewards program offers a slightly different version of this perk. Cardholders of the IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card receive the fourth night free on award stays.

When you book a stay using IHG points:

  • The fourth night costs zero points
  • The benefit automatically applies to every four-night block

For example:

  • 4 nights → pay for 3
  • 8 nights → pay for 6

Because this benefit is tied to the credit card, it’s one of the easiest ways to reduce the cost of longer stays in the IHG program.

Use Hilton Statement Credits from multiple cards

Several American Express cards offer Hilton statement credits throughout the year, which can help reduce, or even fully cover, the cost of a hotel stay. If you hold multiple cards, you can stack these credits together for even bigger savings.

We used this strategy during a stay at Hilton York, where the nightly rate was about $230, and credits covered the cost of 1 night.

The Hilton Honors American Express Surpass Card offers:

  • Up to $50 in statement credits each quarter
  • $200 per year total
  • Valid on eligible purchases made directly at Hilton properties

The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card offers:

  • Up to $60 in statement credits each quarter
  • Up to $240 per year
  • Valid on purchases made at Hilton hotels

The American Express Business Platinum Card offers:

  • Up to $50 in statement credits per quarter
  • Up to $200 per year
  • Valid on eligible purchases at Hilton properties

The Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card offers:

  • Up to $200 in statement credits twice per year
  • Valid on purchases at participating Hilton resorts

Bottom line

You don’t always need a huge stash of points to enjoy free hotel nights. Between credit card hotel credits, free night certificates, statement credits, and loyalty program perks, there are multiple ways to stay at hotels for free every year.

For families who travel frequently, these strategies can easily unlock several free nights annually without redeeming a single point. While we do use points and miles for most of our stays, we also make it a priority to maximize all the credits and free night benefits that come with credit cards.

Some of these perks are effortless, while others take a bit more planning, but if you’re looking for ways to get free hotel stays without using points, these strategies are the most effective.
