Hounds Tooth Inn, the Hotel Review

Hounds Tooth Inn

We were happy to discover this small rustic boutique inn from the Small Luxury Hotels of the World chain called Hounds Tooth Inn. Hounds Tooth Inn is a cozy and stylish property situated on 3.5 acres in the little town of Oakhurst, California. It’s located at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains and is only a short drive from Yosemite National Park.

We have to admit, there are not so many properties that you can stay on points in proximity to National Parks. And we could not miss a chance to stay at one of them.

💡Good to Know

Did you know that Hyatt partnered with the Small Luxury Hotels of the World? This means that the World of Hyatt members can earn and redeem points at a few hundred SLH properties worldwide.

Simply book your stay through the Hyatt website, and make sure to attach your Hyatt membership number to a reservation!

Hounds Tooth Inn is a Category 6 hotel with only 13 rooms (with 2 Suites and 1 Cottage). Our favorite and distinctive feature of these rooms is that most of them have a fireplace and a separate oversized jetted tub in-room!

While you can actually book a Queen Deluxe Room for 25,000 Hyatt Points per night (on a Standard Night), we booked a Summer Cottage with cash. We weren’t sure we’d be upgraded to it since, well, it was the only one. Plus, the cash rate at the time of booking was not that bad, and it seemed like a good deal considering we got the whole cottage to ourselves.

💡Good to Know

Since Small Luxury Hotels of the World is not a Hyatt brand or a Collection, they do not honor your status with Hyatt.

However, they do offer quite great benefits to the World of Hyatt Members, such as complimentary breakfast, early 12 pm check-in, and late 2 pm checkout upon availability, and even one category room upgrades (also upon availability).

Plus, you earn elite qualifying nights toward your next tier status with Hyatt.

Check-in

When entering Hounds Tooth Inn, one might think they are just visiting a friend that has a mansion in the mountains. It is very welcoming, cozy, and tastefully decorated.

The lobby serves as both the check-in area and a combined dining and lounging space. This living room style concept is very compact yet charming and not crowded. Our girls noticed homemade muffins and a little bucket with lollipops on the counter right away and asked if they could have some!

The Room

We stayed at a spacious quaint Cottage with 1 King Bed, a full kitchen, a dining area with a dining set, and a separate jetted tub!

There were also two Twin sized beds (one of them was a rollaway bed), so this Cottage could easily fit a family of four.

Everybody loved the oversized jetted spa, that could fit the whole family! Zoe usually hangs out at the hot tubs whenever we stay at a hotel, so she was stoked to see a “hot swim” in our room.

The bathroom had a one-sink counter and a shower with two shower heads.

Dining

While there was no onsite restaurant at the inn per se, they offered a complimentary breakfast and wine reception hosted in the lobby. You can also dine in the town at one of the nearby restaurants or order takeout and have dinner in the lobby.

Breakfast

For breakfast, Hounds Tooth Inn offered bacon, scrambled eggs, omelet, french toast, pancakes, and sautéed potatoes with wild mushrooms. They also had cereals and granola with milk. Everything was delicious!

Dinner

A delightful surprise was an evening wine reception in the lobby, which included a selection of wine, a charcuterie board, and a bruschetta. We had a late lunch that day, so this was basically our dinner.

Again, either families with kids don’t usually stay at this hotel, or we just got lucky, but both times that we stayed at Hounds Tooth Inn, it was only us and a few other couples enjoying the evening in the lobby.

24-hour available snacks

There was a small fridge in the lobby with complimentary water, soda, and some snacks, such as individually wrapped PB&J sandwiches and cheese. In addition to that, there was a coffee maker and a kettle with some tea selection.

Hounds Tooth Inn is only 10 minutes away from Bass Lake. We visited this area in winter and could only tell you a little about the lake, such as how we took a beautiful walk along it. Whereas in summer, it is a very popular destination for water sports, fishing, and sunbathing!

Yosemite National Park

Hounds Tooth Inn is just a little over 1-hour drive from Yosemite Valley. You can plan a day trip to explore this National Park with its surreal mountains, waterfalls, and trails.
