If you’re planning a trip to Alaska, witnessing the glaciers should be at the top of your list. Alaska is home to some of the most magnificent glaciers in the world. As enormous masses of ancient ice slowly flow down mountain valleys, glaciers shape the very landscape of Alaska. Did you know there are tens of thousands of glaciers in Alaska?

Over the past few years, our family has been fortunate to visit several of Alaska’s renowned glaciers, such as Mendenhall Glacier near Juneau and the Exit Glacier within the Kenai Fjords National Park. Recently, we spent a few days in Juneau, Alaska’s state capital, located in Southeast Alaska. This little town is tucked in a temperate rainforest between the base of Mount Juneau in the Tongass National Forest and the Gastineau Channel. Juneau is a true gem for nature lovers and is home to soaring bald eagles, brown bears, and majestic humpback whales.

Interestingly, with no road access, Juneau is the only state capital in the mainland United States that can only be reached by airplane or boat.

Juneau has a rich Gold mining history, with the mining industry being a significant part of the local economy in the past. The legacy of mining in Juneau still lives on through the many historical sites and artifacts – from abandoned mines to preserved mining equipment.

We landed in Anchorage at around 11 pm, and by the time we collected our luggage, picked up our rental car, drove to the hotel, and set things up, it was already 1 am. We had read some horror stories about people not being able to pick up their rental cars due to covid-related availability issues. However, everything went smoother than we thought; there were no problems with the rental car or luggage whatsoever.

We dreamed about going to Alaska for a very long time. The Last Frontier has so much to offer for the great outdoors, breathtaking sky tall mountain ranges, glaciers, pristine fjords, wildlife sightseeings, you name it. However, with the pandemic and the new baby it was hard to plan this trip since there were so many unknowns in the equation.
