Review: Numu Boutique Hotel San Miguel de Allende, Mexico

San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, is a magical destination, renowned for its colonial charm, cobblestone streets, and vibrant arts scene. During our recent trip to Mexico, we chose to stay at Numu, part of The Unbound Collection by Hyatt, and it proved to be an excellent choice for our family getaway.

Located in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, Numu Boutique Hotel is a five-story luxury property that opened on February 1, 2023. The hotel features 44 rooms, including four suites, as well as a rooftop pool, two restaurants. We spent three nights at Numu, and here’s everything you need to know before booking your stay.

Getting to San Miguel de Allende from Mexico City

San Miguel de Allende does not have its own airport, so there are several options for reaching the city.

  • By Plane: Fly to León (BJX) or Querétaro (QRO). León is about 1.5–2 hours (90 km/56 miles) by car, while Querétaro is about 1–1.5 hours (70 km/43 miles).
  • By Bus: Comfortable first-class buses (ETN or Primera Plus) take 4–5 hours from Mexico City’s Terminal Norte. The station is about an hour from Polanco.
  • By Car: Driving from Mexico City takes around 3.5–4 hours via Highway 57D.

We booked a private car transfer through our Numu in San Miguel, which cost about $440 one way for our family of 4. The ride was very smooth, and our driver reached SMDA in 3.5 hours.

Although the transfer was expensive, it was comparable to the cost of four plane tickets. It also allowed us to avoid the hassle of flight connections and transfers.

However, we were double charged for taxes by the hotel. We attempted to resolve the issue via email, but they did not refund the extra $43 as promised and stopped responding, so we had to escalate the matter with our bank.

Location and Check in

Numu Boutique Hotel is centrally located next to Hotel Feliciana and across from the Rosewood. It is about a 15-minute walk from the central garden area surrounding the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel. The location offers a quieter atmosphere while still being close to San Miguel’s main attractions.

Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by attentive staff and a resident dog named Pancho, making check-in a seamless experience.

One of the most charming aspects of Numu Boutique Hotel is Pancho, the hotel’s giant, friendly resident dog. Pancho roams the property, greeting guests with a calm and welcoming presence.

Room at Numu Boutique Hotel San Miguel de Allende

We stayed in a Standard 2 Queen Beds, which was beautifully designed with modern Mexican touches—handcrafted decor, warm wood tones, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The room was spacious for a boutique hotel, and we especially appreciated the comfortable bed, a balcony and luxurious rain shower.

Note to family travelers, Standard 2 Queen Beds at Numu Boutique Hotel San Miguel de Allende was the only room with 2 beds, and they do not provide rollaways. So even with a Suite being available for our dates, we could not get upgraded, due to us having 4 people in our party.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the water bottle provided “For use during your stay” is not complimentary and we were charged $15 after.

Numu Boutique Hotel San Miguel de Allende for families

Although Numu is more of a boutique luxury property, we found it welcoming for families. The staff was accommodating, just look at the sweet gifts they gave the girls on Christmas Eve.

Our kids loved exploring San Miguel’s colorful streets just steps from the hotel. However, there’s no dedicated kids’ club or play area at the property, so families traveling with younger children may want to plan outdoor activities in town (luckily, there is a playground at the Parque Benito Juárez, just minutes away from the hotel).

Enrique Late Breakfast, Numu Boutique Hotel San Miguel de Allende

We had a delicious breakfast that included fresh chilaquiles, eggs, and house-made pastries. The girls chose pancakes, fruits, and even an acai bowl. Interestingly, the only option for breakfast was outdoors. While the setting was beautiful and serene, it was quite chilly in the early morning of December.

Enrique Late Breakfast was the restaurant where we enjoyed our complimentary breakfast for four, thanks to our Globalist Status. The hotel provided an à la carte option with a selection of entrées and drinks.
