Traveling with kids is not only a fun way to explore new places but also an opportunity to teach your kids about different cultures. Exposing children to different ways of life can broaden their horizons, increase their empathy, and help them develop a more inclusive mindset.
Over the years, we had the privilege of traveling to various countries, including Peru, The Bahamas, and Turkey, among others. Through our travels, we’ve learned valuable lessons about different cultures and developed a deep appreciation for the diversity of the world.
In this post, we’ll explore some ways to teach kids about different cultures through travel.
Research the culture beforehand
Before you go on your trip, take the time to research the culture you’ll be visiting. Look up information on local customs, traditions, and history. You can also read books, watch movies, or listen to music that originates from that culture. This will help you and your children understand the background and context of the culture and prepare you for what to expect.

Visit cultural landmarks
Visiting cultural landmarks such as museums, historical sites, and cultural centers can be an excellent way to learn about a culture. Many of these places have exhibits, interactive displays, and guided tours that can help kids learn about the culture in fun and engaging way.
You can also attend cultural festivals or events, where you can experience firsthand the traditions and customs of the culture.
In Peru, we visited the ruins of Machu Picchu, where we learned about the history and culture of the Inca civilization. In Turkey, we explored the ancient city of Sagalassos, where we saw incredible ruins and learned about the city’s history.
One of the most impressive cultural landmarks we visited during our trip to Turkey was the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. This historic building has been a church, a mosque, and now serves as a museum. As we walked through the massive structure, we were in awe of its incredible architecture and the history it represents. The intricate mosaics, frescoes, and marble pillars were stunning, and we could feel the weight of history as we explored the halls.
We learned about the building’s rich history, from its construction in the 6th century to its conversion into a mosque by the Ottoman Empire. Visiting the Hagia Sophia was a humbling and inspiring experience that gave us a glimpse into Istanbul and Turkey’s complex and diverse history.
Try the local food
Food is a significant part of any culture, and trying local cuisine can be an exciting way to learn about a culture. Encourage your children to try new foods and flavors, and explain to them the ingredients and cooking methods that are unique to that culture.
Trying local food is always a highlight of our trips. We encouraged our children to try new flavors and dishes. In Peru, we tried traditional Peruvian dishes such as ceviche and lomo saltado. In Turkey, we ate kebabs, pide, and baklava, and we got to try various dishes with conk in the Bahamas.
Another example of how we immersed ourselves in the culture of the places we visited was when we ate street food in Bucerías, Mexico. While exploring the town, we stumbled upon a street food vendor and decided to try some of the local specialties. We tried tacos al pastor – marinated pork tacos and elote – grilled corn on the cob topped with mayo, cheese, and chili powder. The flavors were incredible, and we enjoyed watching the vendor prepare the food right in front of us.
Learn the language
Learning a few phrases in the local language can be a great way to connect with the culture and its people. Teach your children how to say basic greetings, please and thank you, and other useful phrases. You can also practice the language with locals, which can be a fun and rewarding experience.
In Peru, we learned basic Spanish phrases, and in Turkey, we practiced our Turkish with the locals. Our attempts to communicate in their language were always appreciated and helped us connect with the locals on a deeper level.
Embrace cultural differences
Encourage your children to embrace and appreciate cultural differences. Explain to them that different cultures have different values, beliefs, and customs and that it’s essential to respect and appreciate these differences. Teach them to be open-minded, curious, and respectful of other cultures and ways of life.
In Peru, we saw the importance of llamas to the Andean culture and learned about the Inca’s religious beliefs. In Turkey, we experienced the hospitality and warmth of the Turkish people and learned about the country’s rich history and culture.
Bottom line
Traveling with our kids has been an incredible opportunity to teach them about different cultures. It is fascinating to witness different cultures, environments, and customs. We are already planning our next family adventure, where we hope to continue learning and growing together.
