Cocorico Porto review: a family-friendly boutique hotel in Porto, Portugal

Last October, we spent two nights in Porto as part of our week-long trip through Portugal. We were searching for a reasonably priced hotel in the city center that could sleep four in one room, a tough combo to find in Europe. Cocorico Porto, a charming Mr & Mrs Smith property, checked all the boxes for our family: a spacious room for the four of us, a walkable location, and breakfast included.

Here’s the detailed Cocorico Porto review, what it was like staying there with kids, and why we’d recommend it to families visiting Porto.

Booking Cocorico Porto

Cocorico is part of the Mr & Mrs Smith collection, which joined World of Hyatt in 2023. Note that there are no Hyatt hotels in Porto other than a few Mr & Mrs Smith properties.

Now, Mr & Mrs Smith hotels can indeed be booked with Hyatt points, but unlike other Hyatt hotels, the points pricing is dynamic, meaning it changes with the cash rate.

However, the points price at Mr & Mrs Smith usually does not offer the best redemption, as it’s roughly 1 cent per point, so we chose to pay cash for this stay.

When staying at Mr & Mrs Smith properties, it’s important to note that booking through Hyatt’s website, even if you’re paying with cash and not redeeming points, gives you access to valuable perks. These include:

  • Base points
  • 30% bonus points as Globalist
  • Double points for staying at a Mr & Mrs Smith property, which was currently running
  • Elite night credits toward Globalist status

Note: Elite benefits like late checkout or upgrades are not guaranteed at MMS hotels, but the staff was helpful and welcoming throughout our stay.

Cocorico Porto, location

Cocorico is located in Porto’s Cedofeita neighborhood, just a 10-minute walk from São Bento station and 15 minutes from the Ribeira waterfront. The area felt more residential than touristy, which we appreciated. There were plenty of bakeries and cafes nearby, and we liked being able to walk to most sights while enjoying a quieter base. 💡Good to know: We always use Airalo eSIMs when traveling internationally so we’re connected the moment we land, no need to hunt for airport Wi-Fi or local SIM cards. For our trip to Portugal, we paid just $11 for 10GB of data valid for 15 days. Use code IRINA8735 for $3 off your first purchase.

Cocorico Porto, Prestige Family Room

Cocorico Porto is part of the Mr & Mrs Smith collection, a group of boutique hotels with lots of charm and personality. This one has a cozy French-Portuguese vibe and just 10 rooms. It was our first time staying at a Mr & Mrs Smith hotel, and we were excited to finally try one out.

We booked the Prestige Family Room, a 60-square-meter space with a king bed, twin bunk beds in a separate small room, a sitting area, and a private balcony. It was more than enough room for our family and gave us space to relax in between outings.

💡Good to know: Rates at Cocorico Porto include a continental breakfast and complimentary daily bottled water in your room, available to all guests, regardless of loyalty status.

The design was eclectic and fun, French-inspired furniture, bold wallpaper, and lots of natural light. The bathroom had a large walk-in shower and full-sized amenities, and there was space to unpack and settle in, which we always appreciate when traveling with kids.

Dining at Cocorico Porto

Cocorico’s French-inspired restaurant offers a unique dining experience, serving dinner from Tuesday to Saturday, 5pm to 10pm. While we only enjoyed breakfast during our stay, the restaurant’s offerings include French dishes crafted from local ingredients, with wine pairings from the Douro Valley.

Breakfast at Cocorico Porto

Breakfast was included in our stay and served either in the hotel’s indoor dining room or the courtyard in warmer months. The menu included eggs made to order, fresh fruit, yogurt, cheese, croissants, pancakes, and coffee.

It wasn’t a buffet, but it was fresh, simple, and satisfying. The setting was relaxed and quiet, and the staff made sure our kids were happy, too.

Family-friendly hotel in Porto, Portugal

Cocorico doesn’t have traditional family-focused amenities like a kids’ club or pool, but it worked well for our stay. The family room layout with bunk beds was perfect for our needs, and the boutique scale of the property made it feel like a home base after exploring the city.

There was even a small wooden rocking horse and a basket of toys in the kids’ room, simple touches that made our stay more comfortable and enjoyable for the little ones.

Bottom Line

If you’re searching for a family-friendly hotel in Porto, this Cocorico Porto review covers why it was the perfect fit for our stay. Cocorico blends thoughtful design, personalized service, and a quiet yet central location just a short walk from the city’s main attractions.

It’s part of the Mr & Mrs Smith collection, which means you can book it with Hyatt points when the rates make sense, or pay cash and still earn World of Hyatt points and elite night credits.

For families, Cocorico offers more than just a stylish place to sleep. The family room layout with bunk beds gave us the extra space we needed, and the boutique scale of the hotel made it feel like a peaceful home base after busy days exploring the city.
